Option discrimination

Two answers feel equally plausible, you can justify both choices, or you change answers late.

EMQs are matching tasks, not just recognition questions.

An Extended Matching Question usually provides a list of possible answers and a set of clinical stems. Each stem must be matched to the best option from the shared list.

The difficulty is that several options may be plausible. The candidate must use the wording of the stem and the available options to select the best match.

This means a candidate can understand the topic but still lose marks if the matching process is imprecise.

In EMQs, the question is not only “What does this look like?” It is “Which option in this list best matches this stem?”
